As vocational education and training has a federal design in Italy, a cooperation agreement with the Italian trade unions under Unions4VET is being held at regional level in Piemont, Veneto and Tuscany with the CGIL, CISL and UIL trade unions. The Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro (CGIL) was founded in 1944 and is the largest federation of trade unions in Italy with around 5.6 million members. It is broken down into 12 national, sectoral trade unions. The national federation along with these 12 trade unions negotiates national tariff agreements and represents employee rights at all levels of the social system right down to the workplace. The CGIL is a member of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).
The Confederazione Italiana Sindacati Lavoratori (CISL) is the second largest trade union association with ap 4, 3 Mio members in 2014 and in Piemont CISL has 272 000 members. The CISL was founded in 1948 as a Christian-democrat split off of the CGIL. It has 19 major national sectoral unions and 9 secondary federations. It is also member of ITUC and ETUC.
The Unione Italiana del Lavoro (UIL) was founded in 1950 as a further split-off of CGIL with social-democratic and non-denominational inspiration. It has ap. 2,2 Mio members in 16 sectoral unions. UIL is the third Italian ETUC and ITEC member.
